Abner was only 14 months old when he arrived with his parents from El Salvador for life-saving liver transplant surgery at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital. After weeks of pre-operative tests, the surgery was performed to transplant a portion of his father’s liver into Abner’s tiny little body. Shortly thereafter Abner developed complications. These complications necessitated the need for the little boy to remain in the ICU while his parents stayed in the nearby Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut.
Once Abner was released from the ICU, follow up medical visits were required and he needed to be near the hospital. For the last 12 months, Abner and his family have been at the House. The family is able to stay in this country, together, during Abner’s recovery only because the Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut has been their “home away from home” and a welcoming beacon in this very challenging time.
